I finally hit the uninstall button on Warzone Mobile yesterday.
Activision officially pulled the plug on April 17, 2026, and while we all saw it coming when they delisted it last year, it still stings. It was supposed to be the chosen one—the game that brought the true Verdansk experience to our phones. Instead, we got optimization issues, battery drain, and a player base that just wouldn't migrate.
But nature abhors a vacuum. With Warzone Mobile out of the picture, millions of players are looking for a new drop zone. And honestly? PUBG Mobile and CODM are putting out some of their best updates in years to catch the runoff.
PUBG Mobile 4.4: Getting Trampled on Nimbus Island
If you thought PUBG Mobile was going to play it safe for Version 4.4, you haven't been paying attention. Dropping back in May, Level Infinite turned Erangel into a mythological fever dream with the "Hero's Crown" mode.
I dropped into Nimbus Island yesterday expecting a standard early-game firefight, and instead, I got absolutely bodied by a Centaur boss. Yes, a Centaur. If you manage to beat it, you can actually recruit it as an ally to help you conquer the Crowned Lands. It sounds ridiculous on paper, but trying to hold an angle while a half-man, half-horse gallops past your cover is the exact kind of chaos I play this game for.
They also threw the Panzerfaust and JS9 into the ground loot pool on Classic maps, which has completely flipped the close-quarters meta. It’s weird, it’s aggressive, and the player base is eating it up. (Also, shoutout to the Blue Lock collab that hit late May—clean skins if you're into the anime).
CODM Season 5: The Boys and the BAL-27 Laser Beam
While PUBG is out here playing with Greek gods, Call of Duty: Mobile looked at Season 5 and chose absolute violence.
Season 5, "Revenge," brought The Boys crossover right as the TV series wrapped up its finale. Getting laser-eyed across the map by someone in a Homelander skin is a uniquely terrifying experience. But it’s not just cosmetics. The new Armored Royale mode is a squad-based BR where your team spawns with a heavily armored vehicle that acts as your respawn anchor. If your squad comms are bad, you will lose your truck and your match in about two minutes flat. It is loud and incredibly punishing.
Let’s talk meta, though. They introduced the BAL-27 Assault Rifle, and if you haven't leveled it yet, you are actively throwing your ranked matches. Forget the old Advanced Warfare ramp-up mechanic—in CODM right now, it’s just a straight-up laser beam. Fast fire rate, incredibly low recoil, and it absolutely melts in mid-range engagements. Pair that with the new Mythic Kui Ji Operator draw that dropped alongside the crossover events, and the lobbies are looking incredibly sweaty right now.
The Verdict
The death of Warzone Mobile is a massive bummer for the hardcore tactical crowd. I wanted it to succeed. But you can't deny that PUBG Mobile and CODM are capitalizing on the moment perfectly.
Whether you want to fight mythological beasts in PUBG or run over squads in an armored truck in CODM, mobile gaming in mid-2026 is in a surprisingly good spot.
